all together always

'A' is for 'Always', as in the way that all of the events and happenings that occur around the world during your years of military service will always be associated with the military. You don't realize it at the time but in the future these 'happenings' will always bring memories of those years and your thoughts will drift back to your time in uniform. I went to the USO in Saigon on a day near Thanksgiving in 1969 in an attempt to get a phone call home; the lines were too great so I had a hamburger. I always remember that hamburger every year at Thanksgiving when I sit down to a turkey dinner. And every time someone mentions the Woodstock music fest, the first Apollo moon landing, or the infamous Rolling Stones concert at the Altamont raceway, my mind always drifts back to Vietnam and to 1969, the year I was overseas when all of those events transpired.

I’d like to suggest that this letter “A” stand for Almighty God, Who blessed the founding of this nation with godly men and women who came here to settle; with godly leaders who stood up to fight for freedom from the British; who risked everything and sometimes lost it all—including their lives—for the dream that is America. God has blessed those who have followed Him in love and obedience. While it’s all well and good to be thankful, we need to be thankful to someone—to Him, the giver of every good and perfect gift.

A = AVAILABLE... Which has so many meanings on how you would like to turn it, things are available to us, people are available to help us. The second seems to me what our military is available, in no matter what the situation, from picking up cigarette butts, swabbing floors, standing duty while we sleep safely in our warm comfy beds. Or dying while no one notices.
