MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY 2008
JUST BEFORE COOKING 473 HOT DOGS
Pirate: “Do you remember the hog slops guy [at PI recruit dining facility]? He was still coming around when I was a DI. Second tour, no more.”

Bat Rastard: “I remember him...he used to stop at the commissary too. In 1977 Murphy and I went and saw that guy. We wanted to get two mid-sized hogs to have a pig roast for the Squadron. We picked out two shoats he kept on the side for us. We dug a big pit with our scooploader about 300' from Bldg 661towards Alberghotti creek, and started burning pecan wood at 0600 Friday, the 24th of March. We had a steel "coffin" built to sit on the coals with a rack in to hold the hogs, and a lid. That morning we picked uo the hogs, slaughtered and dressed them, put the in the coffin and cooked them for about thirty hours. We had a family BBQ on Saturday and the pig roast was a big hit. We did it every year untill I left in Ocy of 79, and Murphy still roasts hogs the same way at the house every 4th of July. My "Atta Boy" for the pig roast is attached.” --SIED
